Volunteering

Notice re. 2012 dig.

At this stage we’re waiting for the permit to be approved by the Ministry of Culture.

This isn’t likely to happen before April. It might take longer.

If everything goes well, the excavation will run from July 2nd – July 25th.

As long as everything goes according to plan is will be possible to become a weekly volunteer up till July 25th, for people who can meet at the dig site each morning (usually at 7.15am, except Sundays) – for a minimum of 5 mornings.

Volunteers will be responsible for their own accommodation, sustenance and transport. www.visitkythera.gr is a good resource for contact details on the island.

There will also be tours of the Paliokastro site most days (except Sundays), at 9.30am. Great for those who just want to look but don’t have time to become a weekly volunteer.

Call John on + 30 698 437 4571 to confirm details a couple of days prior.

Work doesn't stop when the team leaves the dig site. Finds need to be recorded and discussed in the afternoons each day.

Opening small test trenches to try and determine if a temple from which the 2600 year-old Doric columns reused in the 720 year-old Agios Kosmas church was located nearby... or if columns were moved.

    Hi,
I’m just wondering what the situation is in regards to doing volunteer work through the rest of 2011; and if the season has or is about to end, when is the 2012 season likely to start? I finished a Diploma of Archaeology at the end of last year and have a little onsite experience – 2005 6 weeks Pompeii, 2008 Cumberland St, Sydney and 2009 Paphos, Cyprus. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Judy
